Recorded at Van Gelder Recording Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey in 1962: tracks 1-3 and 2-9 on April 11, 1-1 and 1-2 on June 19, 1-5 and 2-1 to 2-8 on June 20, 1-4 on June 29, and 2-10 on September 18.
Tracks 1-1 to 1-5 were originally issued on the LP Coltrane (Impulse AS-21).
2-8 was originally issued on the CD The Very Best Of John Coltrane (Impulse 314 549 913-2).
2-9 was originally issued on the LP The Definitive Jazz Scene, Volume One (Impulse AS-99) by various artists.
2-10 was originally issued on the LP Impressions (Impulse AS-42).
2-1 to 2-7 are previously unissued.
